What would Don Draper say to an account planner?
I’m guessing nothing all that positive, given his reaction to some market research in the first season of Mad Men. As recounted in the online Episode Guide, “Greta hands the report to Don who promptly files it into the trashcan.”
The question probably won’t be answered. When Mad Men’s third season starts this Sunday, I’m assuming the show will take place in about 1962. While account planning was invented in the mid-1960s, it didn’t really become popular in the U.S. until much later. Still, if the writers feel like it would make an interesting story line (doubtful, I know), they’d probably bend the rules a bit.
Just a thought that crossed my mind as I get excited about the third season. If you haven’t been on Facebook to see the multitude of profile pictures switching to MadMenYourself versions of friends (see below for mine), you might check out AMC’s page to see some really excellent pre-season marketing. After all, with a show about advertising there’s an expectation of decent promotions. And if you haven’t seen the show, I recommend checking out the first two seasons.
